Shelter from the Storm offers the New Zealand tourist industry a contemporary backcountry hut experience on Grasmere Station as an alternative to the Great Walks multi-day tramping geared for mass-tourism. Shelter from the Storm is a contemporary interpretation of traditional backcountry hut heritage that seeks to provide more profound experiences with New Zealand’s natural environment and history.
The design is generated through explorations into the fundamental spatial experiences of shelter, backcountry hut typology and its interior elements, as well as strategies for camouflage and framing.
The design provides visitors with a spatial experience of dwelling in, and interacting with, the natural environment of Grasmere Station and offers interpretive experiences to learn about flora, fauna and the station’s broader history and cultural heritage.
